Immediate Care for an Eye Injury

An eye injury is an extremely severe matter, no matter how little the damage may seem. An eye emergency is at hand when any sort of foreign object, chemical or injury affects your eye.
Remember, you should always seek medical attention if you ever experience any sort of damage to your eye in the form of swelling, redness or pain. Without proper treatment, eye damage can easily lead to a partial loss of vision and even permanent blindness.
Eye injury information
Symptoms
There are plenty of symptoms that are associated with an eye injury. These include a partial loss in vision, a burning or stinging sensation or simple eye pain. Be sure to contact your doctor or a professional as soon as possible to get a proper diagnosis. Visit an urgent care center or emergency room if you experience any sudden vision loss or bleeding in the actual eye itself.
Leave it to the professionals
When you experience an eye injury, the first thing to do is to not attempt to treat yourself. Although it can be tempting, it will only worsen the situation. Leave the treating to the professionals.
Do not rub or apply pressure to the eye or try to remove foreign objects stuck within the eye. Do not use any sort of tools to attempt to dig or remove dust or small particles. If you wear contact lenses, do not take them out if you believe you have an eye injury as this can damage the eye even more.
Chemical injuries
If you are suffering from a chemical related injury, avoid alkaline products such as sodium, lye or lime as it can cause permanent damage to your cornea. Make sure to wash your hands with soap and water to remove any remaining chemicals on your hands. Turn your head to the side so the injured eye is down and to the side. Hold your eyelid open and flush clean cool tap water on the eye for at least ten minutes. This can easily be done in the shower as well.
Foreign objects
If you have a small foreign object in the eye, try to blink to see if it clears the eye. Remember not to rub your eye and always wash your hands first before touching your eye. If available, try to use artificial tear eye drops to help rinse out the foreign object. For situations like this, it is best to see a professional trained on the matter as attempting to remove an object is an easy way to cause permanent eye damage or loss of vision.
Cut and scratches
For cuts and scratches, seek urgent medical care as soon as possible. You may apply a loose bandage over your eye as you wait for medical treatment but avoid applying pressure to the eye. In the future, always remember the wear protective eyewear when engaging with chemicals and particles. Cuts and scratches are extremely easy ways to damage your inner eye or cornea.
In conclusion
Depending on the severity of the matter, surgery or an eyepatch may be required. When in doubt, go seek medical attention for an eye injury. Your vision is nothing to play with; you do not want to risk permanent vision loss over a simple burn or cut.
