What Is a CT Scan?
Want to know where to go for a CT scan? While no one really wants to plan for an emergency situation, it can be necessary. It is important to know where to seek urgent care services before anything happens, as you will need to think and move quickly when experiencing any type of medical emergency. This requires you to make a list of all the places in your local community that offer these types of services, e.g., urgent care clinics, hospital emergency rooms, etc.
What is a CT scan?
Learning about what a CT scan is can help you feel more prepared if you ever need one. According to the Mayo Clinic, a CT scan combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around your body and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues. These images can show a medical professional whether your body has experienced any type of trauma that needs to be medically addressed.
What happens during a CT scan?
The information below explains what happens when someone is getting a CT scan. The entire process is painless and tends to take only a few minutes to perform.
A special table
The first thing a patient needs to do is lie down on the special motorized table. The medical professional will determine the position they need to be in while undergoing the scan. Straps and pillows are often utilized to help the patient stay in their proper position. Once the patient is situated, the table will slowly bring them inside the CT scanner so the images can be taken.
The scanning process
Once the patient is inside the scanner, it is important that they remain as still as absolutely possible while the images are being taken. The scanner machine will then start moving its detectors and X-ray module around the patient. With each movement, images are being taken of certain interior parts of the patient’s body, which are all combined in order to produce an overall, final image.
Following directions
Sometimes, patients will need to follow the medical professional's directions once they are inside the machine. For example, they may be asked to hold their breath during certain parts of the process. Nervous patients should know that they can be seen and heard while in the machine, so they should have no issues being able to communicate with the medical professional.
