Flu Vaccine Facts That You Should Know About
While most understand the importance of getting the flu vaccine, many have misconceptions about it and are skeptical of the idea and its effectiveness. By understanding more about the flu vaccine and its benefits, you can make a more informed decision as to whether or not it is right for you.
Important facts about the flu vaccine
There are many myths that surround the flu vaccine, and it often causes controversy and a conversation over whether or not it is a good idea. The following are four of the more important facts you should know about the flu vaccine.
The flu vaccine can keep you from getting the flu
The most important fact is that the flu vaccine is indeed an effective way to prevent contracting the infection come flu season. While it is still possible to get the flu even after receiving the flu shot before the season begins, it significantly lowers the chance of getting sick with the flu each year. Even in instances where patients contract the flu after getting the vaccine, the symptoms are usually far less severe than in cases where patients did not receive the shot. Therefore, even in the rare instances where the flu shot does not work to prevent the infection, it still helps in some capacity.
The flu vaccine is not a live virus
One of the biggest misconceptions surround the flu vaccine is that it contains the live influenza virus and subsequently, that the shot itself can lead to becoming sick with the flu. However, this is not at all the case and despite the belief of many who are less informed, people cannot get the flu from the vaccine. Perhaps the reason this misconception exists is that many react to the vaccine initially, which can lead to mild and very temporary symptoms of a slight fever or fatigue.
Flu season is between October and May
Another useful fact is that according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) the flu season runs from the middle of October through May. This is an important fact to keep in mind as it is strongly encouraged to get the flu vaccine before the start of flu season for optimal results. Since flu strains change and adapt, it is encouraged to get a new flu vaccine each year before the end of October, although a late vaccination can still work better than no vaccination at all.
Flu shots are widely available
There are many places in which you can receive a flu shot administered by a licensed professional. Perhaps the quickest and easiest way of obtaining a flu shot — especially if you do not have the time or the desire to make an appointment — is to visit an urgent care center. Of course, primary care physicians and many other places of medicine offer flu shots as well. The important thing is that you understand the importance of the flu vaccine and make an informed decision about whether or not it is right for you.
