Common Laboratory Visits at an Urgent Care

At some point, you may have gotten urgent care at an emergency room. The medical personnel here can see you to treat an illness or injury. This facility can do just about anything your doctor’s office can do but without an appointment. You can even stop by for laboratory work to diagnose a condition or get answers to why you are feeling a certain way. The team here has the knowledge, training and equipment to give you peace of mind.

Benefits of going to the ER for urgent care

Many patients may try to make an appointment at the primary care physician’s office for a diagnosis and care. While this is an option, it may not be open at the weekends or in the evening or at night. Emergency departments never close and do not require a call ahead to make an appointment. These facilities will not turn away people who cannot pay at the time of the urgent caresservice either. For lab tests, a patient may not even need to have insurance coverage.

Strep tests

Strep throat is a common illness that people of all ages face. This bacterial infection causes inflammation, soreness and pain in the throat. It can linger for several days or weeks. Some people may not even realize they have the infection until it starts to spread to other places. Urgent care laboratories at the ER can test for strep and correctly diagnose the patient. This allows the doctor to effectively treat the person and get them on the mend.

Flu testing

Wintertime can be notorious for spreading the flu. This illness brings fevers, chills and body aches to the sufferer. The faster a doctor can diagnose the flu, the more quickly the person can get treatment and start feeling well. Rapid flu tests can take as little as 15 minutes before the doctor and patient have the results. The doctor will take a cotton swab across the back of the person’s throat and run a test in the lab. This test allows the doctor to rule out other conditions and start treating the virus.

Pregnancy

With discretion and confidentiality, the personnel administering urgent care can also perform pregnancy tests. A woman may not want to visit a family doctor or may not even have a primary care physician. A urinalysis can determine whether a woman is pregnant by identifying hormonal changes. This test can be a convenient supplement and confirmation to a home pregnancy test that the person can purchase at the grocery store or drugstore.

So many urgent care services at the ER

If you are not feeling well or are worried that you have a virus or infection, let the highly trained doctors and nurses help with most urgent care needs. You do not have to wait until the weekend is over or even until the following day to get the information you are looking for. Stop by a facility near you and ask about getting lab tests for your suspected condition.
