Blood Testing to Determine Cholesterol and Glucose Levels

Many people do not know that blood testing can be performed at an urgent care and primary care facility. Blood tests are needed for various reasons, but ultimately, they help maintain good health.

Two of the most common things that blood testing can check for are glucose and cholesterol levels. These specific tests are typically recommended for patients who have diabetes, but anybody can have them done. Continue reading to learn more.

A guide to blood testing for cholesterol and glucose levels

Here is a quick guide on what to know about blood testing for cholesterol and glucose levels. Many urgent care and primary care facilities offer these tests, so it can be helpful to understand what might be involved and what to expect.

The importance of blood testing

Testing glucose levels is crucial because it can help patients determine whether diabetes is present or of concern in the near future. Typically, those requiring blood testing for glucose levels know why they need to have it done. For example, those who have taken certain medications for a long time or have any signs or symptoms of extremely high or low blood pressure will likely be advised to have their glucose levels tested on a regular basis.

Blood tests for cholesterol levels are crucial because there are often no indications that one's levels are too high or concerning. This can lead to problems later in life, which may result in the need for serious procedures. Having blood testing done to check these levels can be quite helpful in maintaining good heart health. It is recommended that male patients get their levels tested every year or two after reaching the age of 45, and female patients should get tested after the age of 55. After turning 65 years old, everyone is advised to have their cholesterol levels tested regularly.

What to expect

In some cases, avoiding eating and drinking anything other than water might be recommended eight to 10 hours before a blood testing appointment. This ensures that one's levels are not skewed in any way. However, in other cases, eating and drinking like normal might be advised so that a more realistic level count can be determined. Either way, the healthcare specialist will go over preparation tips a few days in advance so the patient will know precisely what to abide by, as it varies for everyone.

There are a few things to expect during the blood testing appointment. First, blood will have to be drawn, usually from the arm, to check cholesterol levels. However, certain facilities have advanced technology, enabling them to draw blood from the finger. Aside from retrieving the actual blood, not much else is involved in this process except waiting for the results afterward.

When it comes to blood testing for glucose levels, the process varies a bit. Typically, a glucose-based liquid will be administered orally, and then the blood is drawn an hour or so later. This is most commonly done via a vein in the arm.

The results usually take between 24 and 48 hours to come back, but they will help determine what actions need to be taken, if any. The healthcare specialist will then go over the results and what life will look like for the patient afterward. In most cases, dieting and lifestyle changes are required, but these are not necessarily always drastic, which is what many people commonly fear.

Things to keep in mind

Blood testing can sound like a frightening ordeal for some people, but ultimately, it can be beneficial when it comes to maintaining good health. Healthcare specialists can provide multiple resources to help make the process easier and less scary. Additionally, disclosing any anxiety about blood testing ahead of the appointment is a good idea because specific measures can be taken or provided to reduce anxiety.
