Ask Our Emergency Room Office: Here’s What Happens If You Don’t Get UTI Treatment

If you have pain when you are urinating, then you may have a UTI, in which case you should visit an emergency room for urgent care. You might be wondering what will happen if you do not seek immediate medical attention for this seemingly minor infection. However, it can have some serious consequences for your long-term health if left untreated. To understand more about UTI treatments, it is important to first understand more about UTI infections.

What is a UTI?

A urinary tract infection is an infection in part of the patient’s urinary system. This can include the bladder, kidneys, ureters or urethra. However, most of these types of infections occur in the bladder or the urethra. Women are more likely to get a UTI than men. While an infection in the bladder can be annoying or painful, the UTI can spread to the kidneys and cause more serious problems.

Importance of UTI treatment

It is important to treat a UTI as soon as possible. Some serious consequences can come from not treating this type of infection immediately. For example, women can continue to get more infections if the first infection is not treated.

The UTI can spread to the kidneys if the infection is not controlled. This can lead to permanent damage to the kidneys. For both men and women, UTIs can result in sepsis, which is a life-threatening condition. This is especially true if the infection has made its way to the kidneys.

For men, the urethra can narrow from an untreated infection. This can result in difficulties in urinating. For pregnant women, the baby can be negatively affected as well — the women will be more likely to deliver prematurely or low birth weight.

Going for urgent care for UTI

When a patient visits an emergency room for urgent care for a UTI, the doctors may analyze the patient’s urine sample to look for bacteria. The doctors will also look for red blood cells or white blood cells. Doctors may also use a urine culture. This will involve growing any bacteria found in the urine to determine which bacteria have been causing the patient’s infection. This can help the doctor prescribe the most effective medications.

Generally, the first treatments for UTI infections are antibiotics. These can help to kill the bacteria that are causing the infection. The doctor will determine which type of antibiotics to use depending on the patient’s condition and what type of bacteria is causing this infection. Some medications can include Ceftriaxone and Nitrofurantoin.

Visit an emergency room for a UTI treatment

A UTI can cause many problems if you do not treat it. This type of infection can spread to the kidneys and permanently damage them. This can also lead to sepsis, which is a life-threatening infection. Going to an emergency room for urgent care where you can have a UTI will allow you to quickly get the medications that you need in order to restore your health.
