An Urgent Care Explains How to Care for a Sunburn

An urgent care center is a place where people can go when they are in need of health services on an urgent basis. While most urgent care centers will make appointments for those in need for same day services, the option to simply walk-in in order to receive the care that you need is available. In fact, the time it takes for someone to be seen when walking into an urgent care center is anywhere between 30 and 60 minutes. This is great news for those who need treatment from a health care professional in a timely manner.

What can urgent care centers treat?

What is important for everyone who is in need of urgent care medical services to understand is that an urgent care center can treat just about any health issue that is not considered to be a life-threatening emergency. When someone is experiencing an emergency that is potentially threatening their life, they need to go to their local emergency room for treatment. An example of a non-life-threatening emergency may be minor burns such as from the sun.

How to care for a sunburn

According to the Mayo Clinic, intense, repeated sun exposure that results in sunburn increases one’s risk of other skin damage and certain diseases. The following information comes straight from an urgent care center and can help anyone properly care for their sunburn.

Mild sunburns

Mild sunburns can be treated at home using self-care methods. Placing a cool compress on the sunburned area helps to soothe the area. Applying a sunburn gel that contains aloe vera and/or taking over the counter pain medications is suggested.

Severe sunburns

Severe sunburns often result in extremely red skin that leads to blister formation. When a sunburn is severe it is often accompanied by a lot of pain, a high fever, chills, an overall feeling of nausea and even severe dehydration. When someone is experiencing any of these symptoms it is necessary for them to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Professional treatment for a severe sunburn

Professional treatment for a severe sunburn may include immediate intravenous therapy to treat dehydration. Once a medical professional (such as a doctor from urgent care) can evaluate the sunburn, they are able to offer the appropriate treatment, i.e. taking pain medication, using a special cream to prevent infection.

Are you currently suffering from a sunburn?

Our urgent care center can treat your sunburn. The sooner you come in for treatment, the better. While it is always ideal to avoid sunburns in the first place, most sunburns are mild and therefore will go away within a few days or so. When a sunburn is severe, it requires medical treatment, especially when it is accompanied by a fever, headache, confusion, nausea and chills.

If you are currently suffering from sunburn and feel that you would benefit from medical treatment or are in need of medical advice, then we invite you to walk into our clinic so that one of our experienced medical professionals can assist you.
