Benefits of concussion treatment

While people may bump their head on a hard surface from time to time, a concussion usually results from a more serious injury. In these cases, the patient will begin to feel disorientated along with excruciating pain. In fact, the symptoms of not seeking professional medical care can be much worse than some people realize. Benefits of professional concussion treatment include:

  • A professional examination of the patient’s vision and hearing
  • Examining the patient’s balance, coordination and reflexes
  • Cognitive testing of the patient’s memory, concentration and ability to recall information
  • Conducting brain imaging tests for more severe symptoms
  • Customized treatment to meet the patient’s needs
  • In serious cases, the patient may need observation to ensure symptoms do not get worse. However, this is not always the case.

    Identify the symptoms

While it is advised to seek medical attention following a serious head injury or sports accident, minor cases may not need observation or extensive treatment. Some people may not even realize they have a concussion right away. Being able to identify the symptoms and the need for professional treatment can help people avoid serious health consequences.

Common signs and symptoms of a concussion to watch out for include:

  • Pressure in the head
  • Intense headache
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Slurring one’s speech
  • Nausea, vomiting and fatigue
  • Delayed response to questions
  • Temporary loss of consciousness
  • Being dazed and confused
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • irritability and sudden changes in personality
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Issues with taste and smell
  • Since some symptoms can be delayed by several hours following the incident, it is crucial to seek professional treatment and keep an eye on the individual.

    The Treatment process

As an urgent care clinic, we do not require appointments and can accept walk-ins. However, people are welcome to call if they need guidance on what to do when a person sustains a head injury or concussion. Upon arriving at Texas Urgent Care & Imaging Center, our evaluate various factors of a patient’s health. Using these tests to measure various aspects of cognitive function, we can measure the extent of the concussion, the level of symptoms and what the patient will need to do to further recovery.

As stated above, a neurological exam will involve questions about the patient’s vision, hearing, balance, reflexes, coordination, strength and sensation. We will also test the patient’s memory, concentration and ability to recall information. While a concussion will not cause immediate and complete amnesia, it can cause minor amnesia about the injury-causing event or other things.

One of the main treatment recommendations will be to get rest and avoid the activity that caused the concussion. With this treatment, we will also recommend:

  • Helping the patient recover from immediate trauma before sending them home
  • Avoiding physical activities, sports, exercise and vigorous movements
  • Avoiding activities that require mental concentration and thinking
  • Taking it easy with shorter work and schooldays
  • Being sure to take breaks throughout the day while in recovery
  • Steadily incorporate more activities over the following days
  • Patients can also take store-bought pain relievers, such as Tylenol, to help with headaches. If the patient experiences severe headaches, seizures or repeated vomiting, then we will recommend a CT scan to get images of the patient’s skull and brain. From there, we can customize the treatment as needed.

    Follow-up care

Following the initial recovery, we will work with the patient to go over how to continue participating in the sports or activity they love without risking another concussion. We can set up a treatment plan to help ease the patient back into their daily routine. With our guidance and treatment, we can help patients make a solid recovery.
